Andrew Hunter was born in Edinburgh in 1743. He was educated privately in the city and then studied at Edinburgh University following the Arts and Divinity courses. He also studied Theology at the University of Utrecht. In 1767 Hunter was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Edinburgh and he was ordained as Minister of the New Church, Dumfries, in 1770.
